Introduction

When travelling in Japan, you often want to order things at restaurants, cafes, or shops.
To politely ask for something, Japanese uses the expression 〜をください.
It literally means “Please give me ~”.
This is one of the most useful expressions for beginners.
Particle “を”
The particle を is pronounced “o” (the same sound as お). However, it is usually written as “wo” in romaji to distinguish it from お.
Since を is mainly used as a particle, whenever you see it, it usually marks the object of a verb. In this lesson, the verb is ください (“please give me”).
Meaning of 〜をください
• 〜 = the thing you want
• を = object marker
• ください = “please give me”
Structure: Noun + を + ください
This still makes sense if you omit “を”.
・水 を ください。(Water please.)

・水 ください。(Water please.)
(Mizu kudasai)
It’s polite and easy to use.

You can use 〜をください when ordering food, drinks, or small items in shops.

Note: When ordering multiple items, connect them with と (and).
Another word“お願いします“
If you have watched Japanese anime or movies, you may have heard the phrase お願いします (onegaishimasu).
This expression has many meanings depending on the situation, such as:
• please
• that would be great
• I’m counting on you
When ordering food or drinks, it can be used in a similar way to ください.
Example:
・水をお願いします。（Water please.)
(Mizu wo onegaishimasu)
・コーヒーをお願いします。（Coffee please.)
(Kōhī wo onegaishimasu)
Both phrases are polite enough. “ください“ is more direct than “お願いします”.
